It is the most popular day at the racecourse in Munich-Riem, combining major international sport with the thrill of betting and entertainment for the whole family. In summery temperatures, around 15,000 spectators watched the nine races and celebrated the ‘world’s biggest coffee party’. The partnership between the Munich Racing Club and the coffee brand and delicatessen Dallmayr has been in place for 50 years now.
The highlight of the race day was the highly competitive international field in the Grand Dallmayr Prize, a Group I race over 2,000 metres with a prize fund of 155,000 euros. €100,000 of this went to the winning team from Silverton Hill Partnership, riding the four-year-old stallion Hotazhell, who prevailed over Timeforshowcasing and Wimbledon Hawkeye. The best horse trained in Germany was the three-year-old Seguro. The winner is trained by Jessica Harrington in Ireland; for jockey Shane Foley, it was his first Group I victory in Germany.
World Pool and PMU
Parts of the race day were featured both in the programme of the state-run betting operator PMU in France and in the World Pool, operated from Hong Kong, thereby reaching an audience of millions around the globe. The Grand Prix Dallmayr, which evolved from the Bavarian Breeders’ Race held since 1866, is one of the seven top-level races in Germany.
The mare race is heading to Poland
As a premium race day, yesterday’s programme featured a minimum purse of 15,000 euros in every race. In total, the Munich Racing Club paid out 308,500 euros in prize money across the day’s nine races. On top of this, there were additional bonuses for Thoroughbreds bred in Germany. Alongside the Grand Dallmayr Prize, there was blacktype to be won in the Konrad Werner Wille Memorial. The Listed race for three-year-old and older fillies over 1,400 metres went, somewhat surprisingly, to Poland thanks to the victory of the four-year-old Bint New Bay, trained by Salih Plavic.
The day kicked off with the Dallmayr Ethiopia Race for two-year-olds over 1,400 metres. Western, trained by Henk Grewe, won convincingly, triumphing in the style of a top-class horse under champion jockey Thore Hammer-Hansen. Last year, Gostam – who went on to become a multiple Group winner – had secured victory in this race. It will be interesting to see how successful Western’s career continues. It was a particularly successful Dallmayr Day for the Munich-based training centre, as they secured four home victories: two for Werner Glanz and one each for Jutta Mayer and John David Hillis.
“I was particularly pleased about that,” said Sascha Multerer, managing director of the Munich Racing Club. “It was another fantastic day of racing with 15,000 spectators.” For the next race day, there are jackpots of around 11,000 and around 18,000 euros in the V4 and V7 bets respectively, as neither bet type was won on Sunday.

With Pepperfly’s victory in the final race of the day, Werner Glanz has reached the 700-win mark. Celebrating such a milestone on a Group race day certainly makes the occasion even more emotional and special.
