The emotional highlight of the race day was the celebration for the first Munich Derby winner in 76 years. On Sunday, the three-year-old stallion Fantastic Moon, trained by Sarah Steinberg in Riem, won the IDEE 154th German Derby, with her partner Rene Piechulek in the saddle. “The first Munich Derby victory since 1947 makes you proud, but also speechless. It is something very special,” said Multerer, who was in Hamburg on Sunday to watch the “race of races”.
Two wins for Piechulek and Figge
The very successful team of Steinberg/Piechulek was also successful on their home track on Monday. In the Dunlop Cup over 1,600m they won with the three-year-old mare Wolfsfährte, owned by the Brümmerhof stud farm of Gregor Baum, president of the influential owners’ association for thoroughbred breeding and racing. “When the other horses were pushing her, she pulled again, I think she will perform better at the next start,” said Steinberg. Wolfsfährte narrowly beat Disaronno and Tante Tilly.
Piechulek was able to celebrate once more, but the Mazda race over 2,400m was easy. The three-year-old Wedding In May, which Peter Schiergen is training in Cologne, won convincingly by five lengths ahead of La Donna. She is trained in Riem by Michael Figge, who was able to pick up two winners on Monday: the six-year-old Aoraki in the Honda Handicap over 2,000m, ridden by Lukas Delozier, and the four-year-old Aguna to round off the race day. She triumphed with Marie Gast in the amateur race, the Bavarian Landeswerke Cup, over 1,600m.
The fourth home win of the day was achieved by Launching Percy, trained by John David Hillis. The five-year-old won the Cargarantie race over 2,400m with Sean Byrne in the saddle, just ahead of the guest from Dresden, Algeciras. Casinomaster, trained by Frank Fuhrmann in Möser near Magdeburg, showed an astonishing performance: in his third start within eight days, the eight-year-old gelding won the Stellantis race over 1,000m with Sibylle Vogt. He had also won with Vogt on Sunday a week ago, and on Wednesday he came third – both in sprint races on the Hamburg Derby track.
The next race day in Riem is on Sunday, July 30th, with the Grand Dallmayr Prize as the highlight and a possible start by the Derby winner Fantastic Moon.
