On the death of Christoph Freiherr von Gumppenberg

Last Saturday, Christoph Freiherr von Gumppenberg, one of the most renowned officials in German horse racing, who helped shape racing in this country for decades as a handicapper, passed away at the age of 77.

For many years, Christoph von Gumppenberg was responsible for the handicap of the Munich races. He impressed with his expertise, his judgment and his ability to explain what he judged in a coherent manner when questions arose. But Christoph von Gumppenberg’s personality was even more impressive than his professional competence. Always friendly, reserved and always with a smile on his face, the Baron from Bavaria was seen on the German racetracks and people were happy to have professional or private conversations with him.

But Christoph von Gumppenberg was not only at home in the world of horse racing. He was widely respected as a rider, acted as a teacher and shared his wealth of knowledge with many.

Just last week, Christoph von Gumppenberg took part in the Technical Commission of Deutscher Galopp and experienced the European Grand Prix live on site.

The Munich Racing Club would like to thank Christoph von Gumppenberg for his great commitment and dedication and will keep his memory alive. Our condolences go out to his family, especially his wife Angela and his brother Georg.
