European Pattern Committee meeting: Bavarian Classic becomes Group II – New Listed race strengthens the Derby route 2026

Press release from the German Racing Association

A key outcome from a German perspective is the upgrade of the Bavarian Classic (Munich) to Group II status. For years, this race has been one of the most important trials for the Derby yearlings, and the Pattern Committee’s decision further enhances its international prestige.

“By upgrading the Bavarian Classic to a Group II race, we are setting another exclamation mark on the road to the German Derby. The race has confirmed its relevance and quality over the years – now this is also being duly recognized in the European pattern,” said Krüger.

The Munich Racing Club expressly welcomes the decision:

Michael Motschmann (Chairman of the Board, Munich Racing Club):
“As President of the Munich Racing Club, I am very proud that the Bavarian Classic has been upgraded to a Group II race. For many years, the winners of this race have played a very significant role in the subsequent racing season. Horses like Lucky Speed, Isfahan, and Fantastic Moon, all of whom went on to win the Derby, have done so or used it as preparation for their season. This is a positive sign for German racing, and the Pattern Committee’s decision could also have a positive impact on the German Derby in Hamburg in the future. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our partner Wettstar for their commitment. Without loyal and long-standing partners, it would not be possible to run such high-quality races.”

Sascha Multerer (General Secretary of the Munich Racing Club):
“Last year, we cautiously inquired about the possibility of upgrading the race, thereby expressing our interest. This year, the opportunity arose, and we were ultimately rewarded with the upgrade to Group II status. This is a strong indication of the quality of German racing, as this race has so far featured almost exclusively German horses. Perhaps this upgrade will lead to attracting one or two international entrants, which will ultimately contribute to further increasing ratings in German races for three-year-olds.”

Background: Patterns, Black Type, and the Basis for Decisions.
The European Pattern Committee reviews Group and Listed races (“pattern races”) in Europe annually. Decisions are based on objective performance parameters, particularly the international comparability of ratings/performance in the respective races. The aim is to ensure the long-term sporting quality of Black Type races and to maintain their relevance for breeding and sport.
